Aiden Observations Stories

Dear Aiden,

Hey Boog, you’re 2 years old now and you are starting to really talk. When I took you to Halli’s 2nd Birthday party you repeatedly said “No” when I tried to put you in the bounce house. You would see the other kids in there and you would take your shoes off and start to climb in the entrance and then you’d get scared and start crawfishing quickly repeating “no, no, no, no, no, no, no,” and shaking your head as if I was trying to force you into a blender – head first.

Even though you never got into the bounce house you delighted yourself by pulling a wagon around the gym and when you got bored with pulling, you enjoyed riding. I don’t get to see you as much as I like and so I would have pulled you around that gym until my arms fell off.

When it was time for Halli to open all her presents you thought you would help. You found a ball that you thought might be yours and you brought it to me and said, “Ball”. I told you yes it was a ball but it was Halli’s. You seemed to be having so much fun that you didn’t mind putting the ball back, but when I wasn’t looking you thought you would steal a bow. I have to admit there were a lot of kids there but you were one of the cutest.

Later we played a game of hide and seek and at one moment you squeeled with delight and I pick you up so fast and hurled you… right into a light hanging from the ceiling. Uncle Eddie often forgets how tall he is and your head seems to take a beating everytime I am around. You cried and I felt so bad because we were having so much fun. But this is a good time for you to learn that sometimes life delivers a bump on the head even from someone that loves you so much that he would give you everything, even his life, to make you happy.

My favorite thing is still watching you dance. Dancing has always been something that has been such a special part of my life. When I am down I can always dance and the world disappears and I don’t remember bumps on the head or kicks in the butt. For a brief moment there is a calm and a serenity and so much joy. That is a gift and I am so happy that you like to dance because sometimes life is hard and sometimes an escape is good, even if it is for a moment.

Grandma calls me often and since you have been living with her you seem to be all that she talks about. You are a bright light in our lives and I never fully understood the power of a child. The sweet innocence, the simple joys in discovery and exploration, and how when you do something sweet, when you rub my face, or lean into me for a moment I feel like God himself has reached down and brushed my cheek and said I love you.

I will always be there if you need me.

Love,

Uncle Eddo

Unknowing twins marry each other

Have you heard about this?

How tragic. To fall in love and then to find out that you are brother and sister. What are the odds? I bet it has happened before… I read somewhere that it isn’t true that if you have children by a sibling that their likelihood of being mentally or physically handicapped is increased. Supposedly that is all rubbish. Growing up I always heard that if you married a relative your kids would be born mentally retarded, apparently this is untrue.

I heard about this story through a flickr picture I found through Mr. Hyde. He has the best photos and the best captions. If you have not become part of the Flickr world then you are really missing out. With Flickr, you can see the world through others eyes. I love it.

Tickle Me Elmo…

There is a factory in Northern Minnesota which makes the Tickle Me Elmo
toys. The toy laughs when you tickle it under the arms.

Well, Lena is hired at The Tickle Me Elmo factory and she reports for
her first day promptly at 8:00 AM.

The next day at 8:45 AM there is a knock at the Personnel Manager’s
door. The Foreman throws open the door and begins to rant about the new
employee.

He complains that she is incredibly slow and the whole line is backing
up, putting the entire production line behind schedule.

The Personnel Manager decides he should see this for himself, so the 2
men march down to the factory floor.
When they get there the line is so backed up that there are Tickle Me
Elmo’s all over the factory floor and they’re really beginnin g to pile
up.

At the end of the line stands Lena surrounded by mountains of Tickle Me
Elmo’s. She has a roll of plush red fabric and a huge bag of small
marbles.

The 2 men watch in amazement as she cuts a little piece of fabric, wraps
it around two marbles and begins to carefully sew the little package
between Elmo’s legs.

The Personnel Manager bursts into laughter.
After several minutes of hysterics he pulls himself together and
approaches Lena.

“‘I’m sorry,” he says to her, barely able to keep a straight face, “but I
think you misunderstood the instructions I gave you yesterday…Your job is to give Elmo two test tickles.”

I got this in an email and had to share it…

Aiden turned 2, I turned 32

We took Aiden to Chuck E. Cheese for his birthday. He loved it. I thought he would probably be too young to really enjoy it since a lot of it is video games, but they have plenty of things for 2 year olds to do.

He really loved this one ride where you sit on a horse and watch the screen as it runs. We had to help him make ikt go, but he still loved it. He loves horses and dogs, I mean really loves them, which is only fitting since his mom and dad both had horses growing up.

Here he is on one of the toys he got for his birthday, after he got this, he no longer needed any of the rides and toys they had at Chuck E. Cheese.

On the 17th of December I turned 32. This year was probably the most anti-climactic birthday ever. No real parties, just kept it low key and this was how I wanted it. I used to make such a fuss over my birthday, especially since it was easy to overlook being so close to Christmas and all, but now I realize people are busy and things get hectic during the holiday season and so there is no need to make a big to-do out of my birthday. People love me and I’m so blessed that most every day feels like my birthday.

Roasted Squirrel

After speaking with wildlife911 they told me that sometimes squirrels get trapped not in the chimney, but in the housing that is around the smoke tube. “Take a rope and run it down in that crack so the squirrel can climb out.”

This sounded like a fine idea, except that is was freezing cold last night and this morning the roof was still pretty wet. I bundled up and climbed belly first hugging the roof. Wet and cold I fed the rope to the groove between the chimney. I got two ropes and tied them together so when my squirrel rescue attempt was successful I wouldn’t have to get back on the roof, but instead I could just pull the long rope from the ground.

This evening I had  a mini Christmas party and lit a fire. All day I never heard the squirrel, either he got out last night or early this morning, either way I never heard him and if the little guy is still in there, he’s probably not alive.

I don’t smell anything now and I didn’t hear any frantic scratching like he was on fire so I hope he did get out to safety. Now I’ve got to do something to keep that happening from again.

This is one of the joys of home ownership, but even when things like this happen, having a home is still worth every sacrifice. Every day I thank God for my place. Every. Day. I freakin’ love my place. It rocks.

By the way, it tastes like chicken.
