Defining Fashion Moments
Dr. Phil says that everyone has defining moments and that if we look back at moments that changed our lives and who we are then we can learn a lot about ourselves...
Growing up my parents always made sure we had nice clothes. I use the word "nice" because they were, but rarely did they fall into the category of "Supercoolmusthave" clothes.
Now you might think that as a guy that I wouldn't have been fashion conscious growing up, however, I was raised with two older sisters, and an older foster sister for a good portion of my youth.
I distinctly remember the 80's and how everything seemed to revolve around the way you looked. The girls had super huge bangs, the guys had shaved lines on the sides of their heads and if you were lucky, your butt was covered with Calvin Klein underwear and Guess Jeans.
I could go chronicle my life in fashion here starting with parachute pants, guess jeans, Z Cavaricci's, and Marithe and Francois Girbaud, but this post isn't titled, "My Life in Pants."
What I do want to discuss is one particular vivid fashion moment that still burns with extreme clarity in my mind today.
I had just bought a pair of "Bitten Fly" guess jeans and I wanted everyone to know that I was wearing them. The little triangle on the butt of the jeans is the only way one would know that you were wearing them and so this forced me to tuck my shirt in which was something I rarely did because I was a little chunk.
The local grocery store in Sanger was called Burrus. Burrus seemed to employ a good portion of the cool kids and so when my mom asked me if I wanted to go to the grocery store I leapt at the opportunity. I pulled on my Guess Jeans, I tucked in my shirt, I sucked in my stomach and off we went to Burrus.
The crazy point of this story, (and yes it does have one) is that I went into Burrus and purposely walked around until I saw everyone that I knew from school. As soon as I would see someone I would turn around hoping that this cool person would see my Guess Jeans and therefore immediately think I was cool.
As I sit here in type this at Starbucks I am wearing Guess Jeans. The little triangle has gone by the wayside, but the jeans are still cool.
I think it is odd how after all these years that sometimes we still put on something and it makes us feel better about ourselves. Sometimes it is a pair of jeans, sometimes it is a Burberry scarf, and sometimes it is just carrying around a Starbucks cup of coffee.
So what makes you feel better about you?

Oh Eddie - you have taken me on a walk down memory lane. I use to BEG my parents to buy the the "it" brand and then alas I realized that the "it" brand was sometimes the most ugly thing in the world. Case in point" Girbaud jeans are U.G.L.Y. the acid wash, the weird gathering in the front, it makes your waist look like you are five months pregnant and then the fact that I tight rolled them only added to the pain. Funny how I would wear something so horrible (and I knew it didn't look good) just because I knew that other people would think I was cool because of it.
I love to think back to our youths and think what was "cool" or "en vogue"....so funny yet so very fading.
Know regardless of what you wear - people still see you as cool.
"I'm cool, I'm hip...tucka tucka tucka tucka."
know what thats from - or have I AGAIN made a fool of myself?
I think a good pair of high heels mades me feel good oddly enough.
I have NO CLUE what that is from... Tucka Tucka Tucka?
High Heels? Nice.
I am with cav on the high heels scene, but I think that my over priced Dior purse sometimes makes me feel powerful. How shallow I can be sometimes:) Last weekend I wore this enormous belt with a gold lion head popping out of it. It was "bling worthy" and I got some really stange looks, but I felt confident in it. What ever works I guess...
Oh Cav and Eddie - Austin Powers
Oh heels and "cute" outfit (ha ha, boys you have no idea what this means) can change your WHOLE mood. Makes you feel pretty, feminine, and yet capable to handle anything.
lol katie!! tight rolled jeans...I was so there!
Oh - I really don't have anything that stands out that makes me feel better about me, clothing wise, I feel pretty cool all the time....course I'm a bit conceited too, and think I'm pretty much the most amazing thing ever...hee hee
Oh Lava girl, I could so tell you rocked the tight rolled jeans. Did you pair them with the double layer of scrunch socks (in neon colors no less) and a pair of keds (matching your shirt of course) and then the side pony tail with the aquanet plastered bangs that defied gravity. And we thought we looked GOOD.
Yep, people I'm not scared to admit it.
Can you tell that Lava and Eddie are siblings?
Katie - no, uh uh, I didn't do all that, just the tight rollin, I did the socks, but not neon and not two colors, no hair on the side, no plastered bangs - Oh wait - I did use aquanet....and I did look GOOD!
What's that supposed to mean Katie? huh? That both Eddie and I are the most amazing things ever??
If that's what you meant, yeah, you're right.
uhhh
Yes
That is what I meant . . ..
You're talking to a girl who wasn't allowed to wear jeans or tennis shoes to school until junior high. Trust me the first time I got a pair of Guess Jeans (with the zippered leg) it was a great thing.
I grew up in the "rich" suburb - everything was about the label. Still is. I just can't bring myself to care.
And Eddo, what is "bitten fly" exactly?
i say we all get really dressed up in "what makes us feel good" and go out as a big posse.
katie - you can bring your neon sock and huge butt bangs. :)
a massage. a massage always makes me feel better. and a manicure. and a pedicure. and clothes that fit. and glittery eyeshadow. and MAC lipglass.
yep, that pretty much sums what up makes me feel better about myself.
OOO, OOO, i know this!! I used to "peg" my pants also! My daughter swears she would never EVER do that to her pants! Yeah? I tell her, you think I never said, yuck, bell bottoms are so out of style!! That's all I wear now!
I loved the layerd slouch socks, and the layerd button up shirts (two collars sticking up..oh yeah!!) But my favorite, make me feel good, will admit it to anyone is still..neon. I had the coolest neon pink shirt that i wore with neon pink socks with black lace and black high heels. I'd wear that with jeans, skirt, whatever!! ha ha!! ok, don't show this to my daughter.
I'm with Jes. Forget dressing up, can we just go for a spa day?
Oh everyone DO NOT think that I wear anything I listed above - that was just a trip down memory lane -
As to what makes me feel good now. Hmmm, I guess anything that someone mentions. Even when you're in jeans, a t-shirt, and hair thrown up and someone says you look nice - THAT makes my day. Like wihout effort they saw something that caught their eye.
HOw about the "tights" that had the lace at the bottom of the ankle or the ones that stopped at the knee.. with lace of course. Then paired with a skirt, or shorts.
KT forget Lava.. I remember the double layered socks, the side pony tail, the bananna clips, keds.. I even had the hair.
God I can't believe that I admitted about NKOTB the other day, and now this!
What would make me feel pretty? a button-up shirt! I do not own a single one because of my chest size. But, this Tuesday is the day!! I will now be able to wear shirts with buttons, yipeee!!
Faith, you are so funny! I am so happy that it's almost here! Good for you! (but sad for the hubby!)
nothing I put on can really make me feel good - but certain little things...like driving in my car and an awesome song comes on...being around someone you love, I guess having a crush is kinda fun - makes things interesting.
Also just straight up realizing that I have a plan and a purpose that although I may not know is being lived out because of Him.
Knowing what the future holds makes me feel good.
I had aqua, red, navy, and white Keds. I wore two colors of socks. I tight rolled my jeans. I wore neon. I had green tortoise rimmed glasses. I sprayed my permed bangs with Rave hairspray that made my forehead breakout.
Those were my 80's my friends.
I grew up in a Christian school and we had to wear skirts all the time - even to ball games! Yikes! I never had designer anything and my mom used to make most all my clothes. I acted like I didn't care and that it was cool that I had clothing that was entirely unique. I got back into sewing a couple years ago and the funny thing is - what makes me feel good about myself now? Getting dressed up in an outfit that I made and getting compliments every time! Oh, and if there's a cup of chai tea in my hand, it's even better!
I remember Jordache jeans, Sergio Valentes, tight t-shirts, long, oversized flannel shirts, work boots, feathered hair, bubble gum lip gloss and Love's Baby Soft cologne. I'm going waaay back now!
So far I didn't wear anything that anyone mentioned. Of course, Eddo has a largely female fan base so...
Most of my clothes came from Goodwill so... I was generally a decade behind whatever was fashionable at the time.
I wear stuff from Express now mostly. I have a pair of Express jeans and a dark grey Express polo that look awesome on me and make me feel pretty good. Throw in a pair of Puma's and I'm good to go.
I also like the way I look after soccer practice... *shrug* No idea why, I just think I look/feel good after practice or a game.
Hmmmm, I came of age in the days of preppy--not pretty. These days I live in jeans and t-shirts, but I do like to dress up every once in a while. I have these dress that I call my Oscar dress. If I ever get invited, I'll be ready!
Soccer? Did somebody say soccer? Hmmm, hot, sweaty soccer players. Yeah, that definitely makes me feel good.
Eddo, I tried to call you back but you didn't answer, must've been getting some z's already. I was in Squad meeting when you called. If you call me from 10 to 10:30 you will always miss me.
Call me before 12am and between 10 and 10:30pm.
Cav-
Tucka, Tucka, Tucka, Tucka....? Is that the sound that pacman made? I always thought it was wocka, wocka, wocka, wocka...
Eddie-
I can honestly say that I have never had a pair of guess jeans...
