The Crunch Club

My sisters and I were very close growing up. Currently our ages are 29, 30, and 31. My sisters are so close in age that they are less than a full year apart, their birthdays fall on October 21st and the 26th and so for 5 days they are the same age. They are named after the sisters on Bewitched Samantha and Sabrina even though when I was a kid they went by Dena and Precious. (Dena now goes by Sam and Precious is her real first name)

When we were little we always hung out together. I can remember the distinct sound our "Big Wheels" and "Green Machines" made as we raced down the asphalt on Squires drive in the Colony. We swam together in creeks and ponds, we climbed trees and played soccer and kickball, and no matter what we always took care of each other.

One summer, I recall us starting our own club - The Crunch Club. We got the name becuase we always went around saying, "Crunch Y0ur Cookie" and then making a hand gesture in that person's face like the crunching of a cookie. I adored my sisters, I loved those times of hanging out with them and I never really missed not having a brother.

My sisters did everything I did - they rode bikes with me, went fishing with me, taught me how to do cartwheels and match my clothes. They taught me how to play jacks and jump rope, and crossword puzzles, and how to cheer. We made cakes in their easy-bake oven and funny faces on our light-brite. We played Hungry, Hungry Hippos, Shoots and Ladders, and Monopoly until the games were worn out.

My sisters made mums for my homecoming dates and helped me fix my hair. When I was really little and we went on long trips they would let me stretch out in the back seat my head on one of their laps and my feet on the other. They were, and still are my best friends.

I had a great childhood because of my sisters, and I always appreciated the fact that they included me in everything they did, even in the silly things, like The Crunch Club.

I am so jealous right now. You have no idea how much I have always wanted a relationship like the one you just described with my siblings. But our relationships are pretty nonexistent. Our mother never taught us to value each other, but I always thought that should just happen naturally. It didn't though. I have always wondered why. Do you think your parents had a role in the close relationships you formed? (PS- spelled "rode" wrong...sorry, couldn't help myself:))

My mother always made sure we treated each other well when we were really young. I think our closeness in age and the fact that sometimes all we had was each other had a lot to do with our close relationships.

I'm super jealous simply because I didn't have any siblings growing up. (with the exception of my cousins who were the closest things I had to sisters). Just me, myself, and my Barbie dolls, thank you very much.

Very sweet dedication to your sisters. It's wonderful you appreciate them so much.

Eddie you are a great bro to your sisters. I love to hear you talk about them because it is obvious how much you love them and they love you. What a great relationship to have with sisters.

Wow Eddo, I can relate to this story a lot! I have one brother who is 4 years older than me, and one sis who is 2 years older than me. And we all got along great growing up! I don't think my brother minded having 2 sister's and no brother (I hope so anyway!) b/c I always tried to do things with him too, like play baseball and GI Joes, lol! I loved this post! Thanks for sharing.

The Crunch Club? "Crunch YOUR Cookie?"

i don't understand what this hand gesture might be. unless you put your fist in someone's face and act like you are crushing a cookie, but then that would just be a grubby fist in someone's face with fingers rubbing against the palm, and that just doesn't make much sense to me.

please explain the gesture. if not, Crunch YOUR Cookie! so, ha!

That kind of life doesn't even seem real to me. Wow! Sounds like The Brady Bunch! I didn't have it that bad, but every generation loses a little...and I hate to sound old, but life is so hectic for young kids these days, they don't have much time for imaginative play. I try to let my kids be kids and enjoy their childhood. It goes by so fast.

That's it, Eddo. My mother never taught us to treat each other well. Wow, you got a great mom (as we all know) and great sisters, too. Now, that's a family:)

Eddie - you are so the best brother ever - always have been!! I remember at some of the hardest times in my life I felt you were the only one that understood me, you are amazing and I love you so much!

Jes - yes, the crunch club, "crunch your cookie" hand gesture - it's a little hard to explain, but it's kind of an open hand in your face, then a twist outward like turning a door knob, while simultaneously bringing your fingers in - in a crunching motion - really, you had to be there.

Alas. If only my brother appreciated his two sisters like you do yours. We appreciate him!

Right now, though, he is going through that "I'm-too-cool-for-everything" stage, although he did call me from college the other day (shocker, but I was touched).

Great post. It makes me want to call my siblings, you know, just to say HI.

I see this relationship with one of my girls and my son. They play together, help each other, and stick up for each other. It's very heart warming. Courtney is almost 13, Jake 9. My oldest is 15, but she's not as close as they are. She's always been older then her age, know what I mean?

My siblings are 8, 11, and 12 years older then me, so I felt like an only child. I do value my family though, very much.

Very sweet post Eddo. Your parents must be proud!

Eddo, this post is so sweet! You three kids are the most amazing gifts God ever gave me and I have no idea why God loved me so much that He allowed me to have two incredible daughters and such an amazing son.

I am so thankful to Him. If I had never been given another gift, my life would have still been perfect because of the three of you. I love you so much.

Awe you guys are so cute! I never had such a close relationship with my brothers and sister growing up since there is a 7 year difference between me and my brother (I am the oldest) and it ranges down to a 12 year difference between me and my sister (who ironically could pass for my twin we look that much alike).. But that is awesome that you were able to form a close relationship between you guys and keep it! Don't let anything come in the way of that relationship ever!

Lava, I can just picture the hand jesture that you are describing it.. that is so hilarious!

I hope my kids feel the same way. The first two are eleven months apart; the middle and third are 13 months apart. They get along for the most part, but these teenage years will be interesting.

I'm hoping it all goes well...

hi I was the youngest of five. my two sisters were the oldest, so I never was that close to them. the came of age in the wild 60's and I in the mellow 70's - so we are so different.

My nearest sibling - my brother, is very close to me and a great UNCLE to my three kids. Him, I could not do without.
Blessings
