When I was doing email marketing for a national non-profit one of the guidelines we implemented was never allowing the images to be more than 150 pixels. Since 75% of readers have images blocked by default anyway, it cut down on the "huge blank spaces" that show up when images are blocked, and it also keeps the images from taking over the layout. Don't know if that might help you a bit. I am assuming you are use Alt tags for the images as well, so that even when they are blocked the reader can read a description to know what they are (like your Twitter and Facebook icons - could those be smaller as well?)
Just my $0.02 :-)
