  • About to have a huge BF and throw this MacBook out the window. Now my fonts in Safari are all jacked up on txt based pages like Craigslist. #
  • Enjoying Rachael Cantu’s song “Devil’s Thunder”. Spooky, melodic, dreamy, funereal, somber, but still quite enjoyable late at night. #
  • I hate cigarettes, but sometimes when I see people take a long satisfying drag on a Camel, I envy them that satisfaction a little bit. #
  • Just met with a web client at Corner Bakery. A DTS student and so I am excited to help with his website. #
  • @beckpage indeed they do. This one I am doing for free, but he doesn’t know that yet. I just want to help with his ministry. #
  • Booked flight to Chicago in July. Plan to hit up some Blogher parties with Roger and Jes. GT’s will be had. #

Relationship With Mac Still Rocky

March 22, 2009 |  by  |  Technology  |  2 Comments  |  Share

When it comes right down to it, I’m still not in love with this Mac. Everyone talks about how great they are, but there are a few AMAZING things you can do on a PC that make it, at least to me, easier to use.

macbook-pro

  1. Right-Click – Sure I can control and click to get the same feature, but now it requires two hands instead of one.
  2. Clear the Desktop – there is a button for this too, but I miss my little icon by my start menu filled with programs.
  3. I miss the start programs option. Now if I want to access all of my programs I have to go to the hard drive and it requires multiple clicks to get to items I don’t use frequently.
  4. I liked how all of the programs I had open in Microsoft would stack neatly on the task bar when I minimized them. Sure I can hit a key to show all of the windows at once, but they are still hidden from my view and so I don’t remember sometimes that I already have 16 windows of Safari already open.
  5. To close anything the icons are all super small circles. Sure it’s artsy, but I want my close button to be bigger and on the right side of the screen.
  6. I don’t like Keynote, Pages, or Numbers. They are not a substitute for Microsoft Office. Office 2007 is awesome. It takes some time getting used to, but once you know how everything works it is the bomb. Office 2008 for Mac is a turd. Microsoft tried to make Office work more like iWork with it’s look and feel and tiny icons and minimal design and it’s a pile of crap. The functionality is the same, but the ease of use is all messed up.

I’ve got about $2300 invested in this machine and I could have spent $1000 and had a really nice PC with all the bells and whistles. I wouldn’t have had to go out and buy new versions of Photoshop and Dreamweaver and Office. And there wouldn’t be this learning curve that everyone said I would acclimate to in time. What they might not realize is that I was/am a Power User when it came to PC’s. I could make those babies sing and although sometimes they would sing off key, I knew how to get them back in tune.

My review: Unless you just want to pay more for something that works only 10% better than a PC and looks a little prettier, then don’t buy into the hype and just go out and buy a Dell.

Nursing Home Variety Show Big Success

March 20, 2009 |  by  |  Job Updates, Stories  |  2 Comments  |  Share

The room was filled with octogenarians and other people old enough to be their parents. Few smiles abound in the nursing home because who smiles when they are asleep?

The variety show was running 30 minutes behind schedule and when someone brought it up I said, “Where do these people have to be?” As if people in a nursing home had some pressing business – perhaps they were missing their daily episodes of Judge Judy or General Hospital, but mostly everyone just looked sedated.

Then the music began, the curtains were drawn and 6 ladies began dancing to Elvis’s classic hit Jail House Rock. Immediately people began to wake up, including me, and started cheering wildly as these women who could hardly get out of their chairs – and many of them didn’t – started entertaining us with pom poms and smiles.

Following this opening act was a stunning rendition of The Munchkin Song by an 8 year old girl who was the daughter of one of the judges. Act after act went by and no matter what the level of talent we applauded the efforts because that is what we were doing, applauding people for just getting up and trying. It didn’t matter if you were good or not, and undoubtedly some were, but what mattered was that these people, who often times are overlooked, had the opportunity to be seen and heard and to make people smile.

I got to be one of the judges and I couldn’t help but give everyone at least a 7 or above. I sat there having such a wonderful time that I couldn’t help but be thankful for the opportunity to be part of this event.

My new role at the nursing home is IT Director. I only go up to Waco a couple times a month and stay a few days and then I come back to Plano. But I do love the nursing home, the residents, the staff. It has been a blessing and such a sweet change of pace from my old cubicle life at Texas Instruments.

In the end this variety show breathed a little bit of new life not only into the residents, but also back into me.
