Although it might be hard to believe, the article you link to contains an unsuspected hoax. While zetta- and yotta- are official BIPM Prefixes, a Xera- is NOT.
The term originated from a bit of wikipedia vandalism on their FLOPS page, and unfortunately it was taken as legitimate along with the other prefixes. Apparently it all began when the new york times published an article titled “Military Supercomputer sets record” which included the term xeraflop. Other online news sources took it as authoritative, and in turn so did many bloggers.
I have done alittle research on it and I believe that I have found out who the original hoaxer was. You can read about the xera- hoax, and many other bogus prefixes including bronto- , xenta- , and nea- on my new large numbers website.
