“Marin Luther didn’t just help black people, he helped everybody.” -Avery Johnson

This morning I was watching Sportscenter as I was getting ready and Avery was on there talking about what MLK day meant to him and the title of this post is a sort of direct quote. I think people often forget that racism and prejudice affects everyone – not just black people.

A couple of weeks ago I was at a Mavericks game and they put this guy on the jumbotron and I said to one of the other ManiAACs, “That guy looks like a big goober.” As soon as I said it I was livid with myself. I don’t make a habit of putting other people down because it is immature. I don’t know what came over me. I also realize that when you put someone else down it shows a character flaw within yourself. Why do I need to put someone down? In order to feel better about myself. And I feel really good about myself and so I don’t like it when I say the slightest negative thing about someone.

So that brings me back to my above point about Martin Luther King Jr. and how he helped everyone because he tried to make everyone equal. He had a dream that one day color would not be an issue and I think that we have made a lot of progress over the years. We have a long way to go, but change takes time and as long as we live in a world filled with sinners we are going to have problems. It is an imperfect world. Thankfully this world and all it’s hate will one day be a thing of the past.

Happy MLK Day!
